What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis can be defined as “an artificially induced, trance like state characterised by a heightened suggestibility and receptivity to direction". So in order to understand hypnosis we should understand the word ‘trance’.

Contrary to popular belief, a trance like state or “being hypnotised” is not a special state evoked by a stage hypnotist – it is a naturally occurring state that we slip in and out of all the time. Trance is quite simply a state whereby our focus is narrowed towards our internal world.

Think of the times you find yourself daydreaming, frightened by the prospect of doing something you don’t enjoy or a time when you are deeply fascinated by something or someone or even when you are deeply absorbed in watching a film. Look around when you are travelling, most people will be absorbed in their own inner thoughts, they are in a trance. Trance exists everywhere around us and is present in all aspects of our everyday life.

So ask yourself this question – what trances are you experiencing on an every day basis? Are there some that you would rather be without? When we are caught up in our own little world, our mind can lead us to act in different ways and we can become locked into behaviours, habits and beliefs that we know reduce the quality of our lives.

Cognitive Hypnotherapy utilises natural trance like states to assist the therapist in uncovering the thoughts and memory patterns that cause and maintain a clients problem. A range of NLP based techniques are then used to modify these patterns so that they are able to control their behaviour.

Hypnotherapy is relaxing!
